I used to be in a band called xSpace. We were never terribly good and destined to go nowhere, but when you’re 18 or 19, chock full of idealism and play guitar, you really do believe that you’ll bring peace to the world and win the battle of the bands just like the Wyld Stallyons. Sadly, the real world doesn’t play out like the plot of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (Bogus, huh?!) and though we went through drummers like Spinal Tap, we never caught on and finally gave up to move on to bigger and brighter things.

Before disbanding, xSpace did record a few demo tracks and, as I was reminded earlier tonight whilst digging around in the rubbish bin of my iTunes library, a submission for a Smashing Pumpkins tribute album. We loved the Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan taught me how to play guitar and, sadly, really affected my young singing voice. Translation: Billy Corgan is the reason I’m not as great a singer as I should be.

Anyway, I thought I’d share an mp3 of ol’ xSpace’s version of The Smashing Pumpkins “Eye”. If you’re familiar with the original, it was a very synth heavy tune. We were a guitar band, and not full of a lot of nuance, so we translated all the keyboard parts into heavily distorted guitar. I guess it’s somewhat cool, but definitely flawed. A decent effort for a couple of guys who really didn’t know what they were doing at the time. We recorded the track on our computer like the true diy music dorks we were. Enjoy!

I used to have a blog, it’s true. In fact, I had a blog before almost anyone else I knew. With my own domain and everything. I was very ahead of my time. But as time dragged on, the blog became a beast in constant need of feeding. Don’t post for a week? 3 people will remind you of that. Not fun.

Eventually I tired of just writing about myself. Here’s a little secret: I hate correspondence blogs. This means that I really hate blogs that solely exist to keep friends up to date with the the author’s life. It may prove beneficial for some, but I no longer believe that my activities over the last day or week are of any relevance to anyone but myself - and if in some off chance they are relevant to you, I should tell you directly instead of posting it for the whole world to see. Somethings are just better discovered via real honest-to-goodness conversation (facebook wall posts and text messages totally count).

So this is why sometime in 2008, while the world was getting caught up in the epic battles of Barack vs McCain, US vs China, Blair vs Serena, I quietly let my blog die.

And yet… here I am. Typing away like Doogie Howser at minute 21. Wait ’til you hear what Vinnie and I got up to today.

I suppose this is a reboot of sorts. I’ve cleared out the old posts (archived of course) and stripped away all of the lame gadgets that used to adorn the pages. If you want to look at my pictures or twitters or facebooks, you know where to find them. If you don’t, my friend Google does.

My hope is that over the next few weeks and months, I will be compelled to write more about things I actually consider interesting and you will actually consider interesting. Bare in mind that I work in software, play music and have a strange fascination with teenage soap operas. What I find interesting, may end up proving completely boring. That said, I find my interests growing over time. I’m reading more and more blogs on my city (Los Angeles), cooking and fine dining, history and culture. Maybe some of this will bleed into my own blogging. Maybe. Hopefully.

Here’s to fresh starts and open hearts in 2009!
